THIS IS MY SPOT.

KIRSTEN KNODT, GRAPHIC DESIGNER, OLOGIE

What motivates you to be green?
I was born into an environmentally conscious family. My mom was the first recycler I ever knew, and my family, in general, are not heavy consumers. And as a graphic designer, I've chosen a profession that's a big contributor to global warming. So if there's something I can recycle, you better believe I'm going to recycle it.

How did you approach making Ologie a greener place?
I just started looking around Columbus for services available to small businesses. I would never expect someone else to be passionate about what I'm passionate about, so I knew had to find free services and figure out solutions that were within my own reach to accomplish. I figured if I just started doing it myself, others might notice, and think, Gee, I guess I could be doing that too. And that's exactly how it worked.

What green practices did you implement?
The biggest thing was paper recycling, through a free program for downtown Columbus businesses. It's called Just in Time Recycling Services (JITRS). They gave us the bins. We collect the paper, we put it out, and they come pick it up once a week. Call SWACO at 614-871-5100 to sign up. It doesn't get easier than that.

What was most rewarding about the experience?
Being able to sleep better at night. If I'm choosing to work in an industry that contributes to carbon pollution, I want to know I'm doing something to lessen my impact.
